Gérard Souzay was a French baritone born Gérard Marcel Tisserand on 8 December 1918 in Angers. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne before entering the Paris Conservatoire in 1940. He began his vocal training as a tenor but became a baritone in 1943 on the advice of Henri Etcheverry. Souzay graduated in 1945 and made his first professional appearances that year, including a performance of Fauré's Requiem (1945) at the Royal Albert Hall. He made his operatic debut in 1947 in a production of Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto. In 1954, he began a long-term artistic partnership with the pianist Dalton Baldwin. His recording career included more than 750 titles and complete cycles of the songs of Fauré and Poulenc. Souzay earned three Grand Prix du Disque awards, including one for his recording of the songs of Ravel. His operatic roles included Golaud in Pelléas et Mélisande and the title role in Don Giovanni. He retired in the late 1980s and died on 17 August 2004 in Antibes.
