Clyde Stubblefield

Clyde Austin Stubblefield was an American drummer best known for his work with James Brown. Raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was inspired by industrial sounds such as trains and machinery and began playing professionally as a teenager in local bands. In 1965, he joined James Brown’s band, where he helped define funk drumming on recordings such as "Cold Sweat" and "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud." After leaving the band in 1970, Stubblefield settled in Madison, Wisconsin, where he performed regularly with his own band and collaborated with numerous artists. He released solo albums including The Revenge of the Funky Drummer (1997) and The Original (2003). In 2017, he was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He died on February 18, 2017.
