Jean-Émile Diogène Marcoux, known professionally as Vanni Marcoux, was born on June 12, 1877, in Turin, Italy. He began his career as an opera singer, studying vocal training at the Conservatoire de Turin after initially pursuing law. His first appearance on an opera stage came in 1894 when he performed the role of Sparafucile in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. Marcoux moved to Paris and made his official debut in 1900 at the Théâtre municipal de Bayonne as Frère Laurent in Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod. He performed at prestigious venues including the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) in London, the Royal Theatre of La Monnai in Brussels, and the Opéra Garnier in Paris. Notable roles included Méphistophélès in La Damnation de Faust and Boris Godounov in Boris Godounov. He also performed extensively in the United States. He passed away on October 22, 1962, in Paris, France.
