Giuseppe Minafra, known professionally as Pino Minafra, was born on July 21, 1951, in Ruvo di Puglia, Italy. He is a trumpeter and composer who studied under Nino Rota at the Conservatorio di Musica Niccolò Piccinni in Bari. Minafra gained prominence in the Italian jazz scene during the 1980s with his involvement in bands such as Nexus and collaborations with Mario Schiano and Gianluigi Trovesi. His early albums, released on Splasc(h) Records, were rooted in neobop but evolved towards free improvisation and avant-garde jazz by the 1990s. Notable works include Sudori (1995), featuring Giorgio Occhipinti and Carlo Actis Dato, and Canto Libero (2001) with his Banlieues Blues Quartet. Minafra also founded the Italian Instabile Orchestra in 1990 and has collaborated extensively with artists like Han Bennink, Ernst Reijseger, and Michel Godard. He continues to teach at the Conservatorio di Musica Niccolò Piccinni in Bari.
