Humbert Humbert, a Japanese folk duo consisting of Ryosei Sato and Yuho Sano, was formed in Tokyo in 1998. Sato handled vocals, guitar, and composition, while Sano contributed vocals and harmonica. The duo began their musical journey during Sato's time at Waseda University, initially envisioning a French pop-inspired sound and naming the band after the protagonist of Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita. Sano, who had no prior musical experience, joined upon invitation. Humbert Humbert released their first two albums under the indie label MIDI CREATIVE in 2001. They made their major debut in 2003 and gained national recognition with the single "おなじ話" in 2005. In 2010, their track "アセロラ体操のうた" became a hit, reaching Number 1 on music download charts. The duo's album むかしぼくはみじめだった, released in 2014, inspired the 2024 film ぼくのお日さま, for which the title track served as the main theme. In 2025, their single "笑ったり転んだり" was selected as the theme song for the morning drama series ばけばけ. In November 2025, they released the album Humbert Nyumon, featuring the track "Smiles and Stumbles".
