Kurt Hermann Eduard Karl Julius Schwitters, known as Kurt Schwitters, was born on June 20, 1887, in Hannover, Germany. He studied painting and drawing from 1909 to 1914 at the academies of Dresden and Berlin. Initially creating figurative works, Schwitters shifted towards avant-garde movements by 1918, incorporating collage techniques using everyday materials. In 1919, he founded the Merz movement, inspired by his work Merzbild I. Notable works include "An Anna Blume" (1919) and Ursonate (1921-1932), a seminal piece of phonetic poetry. After fleeing Nazi Germany in 1937, he settled in Norway before moving to England in 1940. His final years were marked by the creation of Merzbarn, a project similar to his earlier Merzbau. Schwitters passed away on January 8, 1948, in Ambleside, England.
