Mícheál Seosamh Ó Domhnaill was an Irish singer and guitarist born in 1951. Ó Domhnaill began piano lessons at age six and shifted to the guitar at 16. While attending University College Dublin in the late 1960s, the artist formed the group Skara Brae with Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill and Dáithí Sproule. Their eponymous debut album, Skara Brae (1971), was the first to record vocal harmonization in Irish language songs. In 1973, Ó Domhnaill formed the duo Monroe with Mick Hanly, and they released the album Celtic Folkweave (1974). Ó Domhnaill co-founded the group The Bothy Band in 1974, which released recordings including The Bothy Band (1975) and Old Hag You Have Killed Me (1976). After the band disbanded, the artist collaborated with fiddler Kevin Burke on the albums Promenade (1979) and Portland (1982). Ó Domhnaill moved to the United States and formed the group Nightnoise with Billy Oskay, releasing the album Nightnoise (1984). The artist also performed with the group Relativity on the albums Relativity (1985) and Gathering Pace (1987). Subsequent Nightnoise recordings include the albums Something of Time (1987) and The Parting Tide (1990). Ó Domhnaill was known for an innovative guitar style that utilized DADGAD tuning. The artist passed away in 2006.
