Siegmund Nimsgern was a German bass-baritone born on 14 January 1940 in Sankt Wendel, Saarland. He achieved professional recognition for a musical style specializing in "evil, dark, ambiguous figures". After winning the International Vocal Competition 's-Hertogenbosch (1965) and the Mendelssohn Competition (1967), he made his debut at the Saarländisches Staatstheater as Lionel in the production The Maid of Orleans (1967). He achieved professional recognition for his portrayal of Pizarro in Fidelio and Telramund in Lohengrin. Between 1983 and 1986, he performed the role of Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival. Nimsgern received a Grammy Award in 1989 for his performance in the studio recording of Lohengrin. His discography includes the studio recordings Der Vampyr, Parsifal (1981), and Das Rheingold (1980). Nimsgern died on 14 September 2025.
