Francisca Méndez Garrido, known as La Paquera de Jerez, was born in 1934 in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. She grew up in the San Miguel neighborhood and began her musical journey as a child, learning from the cantaor Aurelio Sellés. In 1953, she recorded her first disc with bulerías and tientos. She signed with Philips Records and released a tango single "Maldigo tus ojos verdes" in 1957. She performed at El Corral de la Morería tablao in Madrid and toured Spain with her show España por bulerías in 1959. La Paquera was known for her mastery of the bulería style. She passed away in 2004, and received the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes posthumously that same year.
