Down Below was formed in 2003 in Dessau‑Roßlau, Germany, by musicians formerly of Cryptic Carnage and Turn. Their debut studio album, Silent Wings: Eternity, was released on 10 May 2004 under Rabazco Records, combining Egyptian‑mythology‑inspired lyrics with gothic and metal elements. In 2007 the band signed with Vertigo Records and issued Sinfony²³ on 29 June 2007; the single "From the Highest Point" that year marked a commercial breakthrough and led to a performance at Rock am Ring. The German‑language single "Sand in meiner Hand" entered the German charts at Number 42 and secured third place in the 2008 Bundesvision Song Contest. After leaving Universal in late 2008, Down Below signed with Premium Records and released Wildes Herz on 29 June 2009, later touring as the opening act for Unheilig. The fourth album, Zeichen, debuted in February 2012 and entered the German charts at Number 81. In 2013 the EP Unvergessene Zeit featured a collaboration with Natalia Avelon, and the studio album Zur Sonne – Zur Freiheit followed on 20 September 2013, peaking at Number 97. The band released Mutter Sturm on 30 October 2015, then announced its disbandment on 31 July 2016, concluding with a farewell concert on 17 December 2016 at Golfpark Dessau.
