Joseph William Mobley, born on April 7, 1953 in Memphis, Tennessee, is an American jazz trumpet and flugelhorn player. Both of his parents were musicians, and Mobley began learning piano at age five. He studied music education at North Texas State University from 1971 to 1972 before earning a bachelor's degree from Rhodes College in 1976. After graduating, Mobley moved to Boston where he taught at Berklee College of Music from 1982 to 1986. His early career included collaborations with Bill Pierce and Donald Brown. In the 1990s, Mobley performed with Marvin "Smitty" Smith and Clifford Jordan, also leading his own big band in New York City. His discography as a leader includes Mean What You Say (1999), Moodscape (2007), New Light (2008) and Bill Mobley Live At Smoke (feat. The Smoke Big Band) (2011).
