The Assembled Multitude was an instrumental ensemble organized by music producer Tom Sellers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1970. Composed entirely of studio musicians who recorded at Sigma Sound Studios, many of these players later became the backbone of Philadelphia soul as MFSB, collaborating with producers Gamble and Huff, and Thom Bell, and artists such as the O'Jays, Billy Paul, the Stylistics, and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. The group released its self-titled debut album, The Assembled Multitude (1970), on Atlantic Records. The album features instrumental interpretations of songs such as “Woodstock”, “Ohio”, “MacArthur Park”, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, and “Overture from Tommy”. Released as a single, “Overture from Tommy” (1970) reached number 16 on the United States Billboard Pop Singles chart and number 6 in Canada. The ensemble also issued the singles “Woodstock” (1970), which reached number 79 in the United States and number 67 in Canada, and “Medley from Superstar” (1971). Sellers died in a house fire in March 1988.
