The Challengers, an American instrumental surf rock band, were formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1962. The group was founded by Richard Delvy, who had previously been a member of The Bel-Airs. The Challengers' debut album, Surfbeat, released in 1963 on Vault Records, quickly rose up the charts and became the biggest-selling surf album of all time. The band's success continued with albums like Lloyd Thaxton Goes Surfing with the Challengers (1963) and K-39 (1964). Notable members included Art Fisher, Ed Fournier, and Phil Pruden. The Challengers also had their own TV show, Surf's Up!, hosted by Stan Richards in 1965-66. The band disbanded in 1970.
