Mecca Normal, an indie rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, was formed in 1984 by Jean Smith and David Lester. The duo released their debut album Mecca Normal in 1986 through their own record label Smarten Up!. Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mecca Normal had full-length releases on notable indie labels such as K Records, Matador Records, and Kill Rock Stars. Their discography includes albums like Calico Kills The Cat (1988), Water Cuts My Hands (1991), and Dovetail (1992). In 1995, they released Sitting On Snaps on Matador Records. The band's album The Observer, released in 2006 by Kill Rock Stars, was inspired by Smith’s experiences with online dating websites. In 2019, they released Brave New Waves Session.
