Starry Eyed and Laughing were a British rock band formed in 1973 by Tony Poole and Ross McGeeney. The duo became friends and began performing as an acoustic act while still in school in Bedford, playing original songs alongside covers. They evolved into an electric duo and adopted the name Starry Eyed and Laughing from a line in Bob Dylan's song "Chimes of Freedom". Their first gig under this name took place on May 28, 1973. The band released their self-titled debut album Starry Eyed & Laughing in October 1974 via CBS Records. They recorded three Peel Sessions and released a second album, Thought Talk, in 1975. The band undertook a US tour supporting acts like Weather Report and J Geils before playing their final gig and disbanding in April 1976.
