Morgul, a Norwegian black metal band from Råde, Østfold, was formed in 1991. The group is essentially a studio project led by Jack D. Ripper, also known as Maestro Discordio, whose real name remains unknown. Morgul's name is derived from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, referring to the "Sindarin élfico" word for "black ghost." The band began with two demo tapes, which gained them attention in Norway's underground metal scene. Their debut album, Lost In Shadows Grey, was released in 1997 under Napalm Records. After the departure of drummer Hex due to musical differences, Jack D. Ripper continued as the sole member. Notable releases include The Horror Grandeur (January 24, 2000), Sketch Of Supposed Murderer (March 19, 2001) and All Dead Here (April 20, 2006).
