Jinja Safari was an Australian indie rock band formed in the Central Coast, New South Wales, in 2010. Initially a duo consisting of Marcus Azon and Pepa Knight, the group later expanded to include Joe Citizen, Alister “Nugget” Roach, and Jacob Borg. Drawing from afropop rhythms and tumbling island guitar, the band created African-inspired dreamy folk pop comparable to artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Animal Collective. The group's first public performance was supporting Miami Horror in Sydney in May 2010. Jinja Safari gained significant traction after winning the Triple J Unearthed competition in July 2010, which awarded them a performance slot at the Splendour in the Grass festival. They released their debut EP, Jinja Safari, in August 2010 and embarked on tours supporting acts such as Art vs. Science and Boy & Bear. Their first album, Locked by Land, was released under Cooperative Music in October 2011. Following their United Kingdom debut at The Great Escape Festival in 2012, the band released a self-titled studio album in May 2013. Jinja Safari became inactive in 2016 after the release of their final albums, Crescent Sun and Crescent Moon.
