Brandi Disterheft, born in 1980 in Vancouver, Canada, is a jazz musician known for her skills as a double bass player, composer, and singer. She grew up in North Vancouver and began performing with her mother, a jazz organist and pianist from Chicago, during her school years at Handsworth Secondary School. After graduating, Disterheft received a scholarship to study at Humber College in Toronto under Don Thompson and also studied with Rufus Reid, Rodney Whitaker, and Oscar Peterson. Disterheft's professional career began in the early 2000s with recordings featuring Greg de Denus, later also Hank Jones, Renee Rosnes, and Vincent Herring. Her debut album Debut was released in 2006 with guest musician David Virelles and won the Juno Award for Traditional Jazz Album of the Year. In 2010, she moved to New York City, performing at venues like Smoke and studying under Ron Carter. Notable albums include Second Side (2009), Gratitude (2012) featuring Sean Jones, Vincent Herring, Anne Drummond, Renee Rosnes, and Gregory Hutchinson, and Blue Canvas (2016) with Harold Mabern and Joe Farnsworth. Her most recent album is Surfboard, released in 2020.
