Gunilla Katarina Backman, born on June 18, 1965, in Sweden, is a singer known for her work in musical theater. She studied classical ballet from 1972 until 1982 and debuted as Liesl in the musical Sound of Music at Folkan theater. In 1984, she toured with Carola Häggkvist and formed the pop duo Katz with Henriette Johnsson. Her breakthrough came in 1990 when she played Cosette in Les Misérables at Cirkus in Stockholm. Backman's notable roles include Maria in West Side Story, Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, and Donna in the Swedish version of Mamma Mia!, for which she won the Guldmasken award. She has also participated in various television shows and concerts, including Allsång på Skansen and I Love Musicals.
