Karlheinz Zöller was born on August 24, 1928 in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany. He began his musical studies in Frankfurt and later studied with Kurt Redel in Detmold. At 17, he joined the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra. Zöller became the solo flautist for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1960. He released notable albums including Flötenkonzerte / Concertos For Flute (1974) and Wie Einst In Schöner'n Tagen • Salonmusik Der Gründerzeit (1976). Zöller was a strong advocate for new music, commissioning works from composers such as Siegfried Matthus and Isang Yun. He taught at the Hamburg Music Academy and the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Despite a critical injury in 1968 that temporarily limited his lung capacity, he continued his musical activities and regained his position with the Berlin Philharmonic after an operation in the 1970s. Zöller died of cancer in Berlin on July 29, 2005.
