Heribert Beissel, born on March 27, 1933 in Wesel, Germany, was a conductor and music educator. He studied piano, conducting, and composition at the Cologne University of Music under teachers such as Günter Wand and Frank Martin. Heribert Beissel's early career included roles as a répétiteur and later First Kapellmeister at the Bonn Opera. He later co-founded the Chur Cölnische Kammerorchester Bonn, which he led from 1959 to 1965. He served as chief conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra from 1971 to 1986 and held professorships at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre and the Detmold University of Music. He won the 1st Prize at the conductors' competition of the German Music Council in 1962 and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1998. Beissel passed away on June 11, 2021.
