Jerold Ottley was an American conductor who received his musical training at the University of Utah and the Cologne Academy of Music and Dance. After serving as an assistant, he was appointed music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 1974, a position he held until his retirement in 1999. Under his direction, the choir reached international prominence, performing at the inaugurations of United States presidents and releasing over thirty commercial recordings, including The Spirit of Christmas (1985) and The Sound of Glory (1989). Throughout his career, he led the ensemble on more than twenty major tours and thousands of weekly radio and television broadcasts. The technical precision and vast discography he established before his death in 2021 defined his legacy in choral music.
