Rita Gorr was a Belgian operatic mezzo-soprano and alto who was born as Marguerite Geirnaert in 1926 in Zelzate. She studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and won the Verviers singing competition in 1946 before making her professional debut at Antwerp as Fricka in the opera Die Walküre. Gorr achieved international prominence for her performances at major venues including the Paris Opera, Covent Garden, La Scala, and the Metropolitan Opera. She is famous for dramatic roles such as Ortrud in Lohengrin and Amneris in Aida. After a temporary retirement in 1972, she returned to the stage in the 1980s to perform character roles including the Mother in Louise and Madame de Croissy in Dialogues des Carmélites. Her final role was the Countess in the opera The Queen of Spades, which she performed in 2007. Gorr's discography includes studio recordings of Aida (1961), Samson et Dalila (1962), and Le Roi d'Ys (1957). She died in 2012.
