Gompie is a project by Dutch producer Peter Koelewijn. The Dutch singer, songwriter and producer was born on December 29, 1940 in Eindhoven and has shaped pop music in the Netherlands since the 1960s. Peter Koelewijn started the Gompie project in 1995. The background is a telephone prank with the hotel owner Hans van Hemert, whose rant is recorded. This recording forms the basis for the single "Alice, Who the X Is Alice?" (1995). The song is based on the original "Living Next Door to Alice" by Smokie and combines the well-known refrain with the interspersed complaint. The release reached number 1 in the charts in the Netherlands. Internationally, the song becomes a hit and reaches number 2 in the UK and top 10 positions in several European countries. 1995 sees the release of the album Who the X Is Gompie? (1995) was released, which accompanied the success of the project. Further singles followed, including "Tic Tic Tac" (1995), but fell well short of the success of the debut. The project remains closely linked to the one-off surprise success. The repertoire ranges from novelty pop to dance pop.
