Gwynne Howell, born on June 13, 1938 in Gorseinon, Wales, is a Welsh operatic bass. He studied at the Manchester College of Music with Gwillyn Jones and later with Otakar Kraus, launching his concert career in 1967 with oratorios before debuting at Sadler's Wells Theatre in 1968 as Monterone in Rigoletto. Howell entered the Royal Opera House in 1970 and created the role of Maxwell Davies in the opera Taverner in 1972. His repertoire expanded to Verdi roles such as Walter and Philippe II and Wagner parts like Hans Sachs and Gurnemanz, earning frequent appearances at the English National Opera, Glyndebourne, the Metropolitan Opera, and the San Francisco Opera.
