Paul Meisen, born on October 19, 1933, in Hamburg, Germany, was a flutist and educator. He began his musical journey at age 13 studying under Johannes Lorentz, later attending the Hochschule für Musik Detmold under Kurt Redel, and studying with André Jaunet in Zürich. Meisen became a solo flutist with the Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe, followed by positions with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg from 1954 to 1972, and briefly with the Bayerisches Staatsorchester München between 1962 and 1963. In 1960, he won the First Prize at the Internationaler Musikwettbewerb der ARD. He later held professorships at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold from 1972 and the Hochschule für Musik in Munich from 1981. After his retirement, he took on a guest professorship at the National University of Fine Arts and Music Tokyo from 1996 to 2003. Notably, a five-CD retrospective of his work was released by the label MDG to celebrate his 75th birthday. Meisen passed away on June 23, 2020, in Singenbach.
