Christian Altenburger, born on September 7, 1957 in Heidelberg, is an Austrian violinist. He began his musical studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and later studied at the New York Juilliard School of Music under Dorothy DeLay. Altenburger made his debut as a soloist in the Vienna Musikverein in 1976, followed by performances with renowned orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with notable conductors including Claudio Abbado, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Zubin Mehta, and has been a regular guest at international chamber music festivals. Altenburger's discography includes Altenburger Plays Kreisler (1993) and Herzogenberg: Complete Violin Sonatas (2011). He has held professorships at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and has served as the artistic director for various festivals, including the Schwäbischer Frühling chamber music festival and the Loisiarte in Langenlois. In 2018, he received the recognition award from the Lower Austrian Culture Prize in the category of Music.
