Silvio Varviso was a Swiss opera conductor. He studied multiple instruments at the Zurich Conservatory and continued his conducting studies in Vienna. He conducted Mozart’s The Magic Flute at age 20 in St. Gallen. Varviso’s early roles included guest conducting in Swiss opera houses and serving as principal conductor of Theater Basel from 1956 to 1962, where he also led a wide repertoire including Mozart and bel canto works. He gained international recognition with debuts at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Paris Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. Varviso became a regular at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1960s, conducting works such as Lucia di Lammermoor, Madama Butterfly, and others. He was music director of the Royal Swedish Opera from 1965 to 1971 and later served as artistic director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart and worked with the Paris Opera. His final performance was conducting Puccini’s Tosca at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp. Varviso passed away on November 1, 2006, at age 82.
