Matthias Ziegler, born on February 13, 1955 in Bern, Switzerland, is a flautist known for his specialization in contemporary music. He began playing the recorder at age four and transitioned to the flute by age nine, inspired by a concert featuring flute and organ performances. Ziegler studied under notable instructors, including William Bennett and André Jaunet at the Zurich Conservatory. His career includes collaborations with Andreas Vollenweider and George Gruntz, as well as performances with Pierre Favre and Mark Dresser. He was the solo flautist for the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. Notable albums include Uakti: New Music For Flute (1999) and La Rusna (Music For Flutes) (2012). Ziegler is recognized for his innovative use of extended techniques on various flute sizes, including quarter-tone flutes and custom instruments like the "Matusiflute."
