Conjunto Académico João Paulo was a Portuguese rock band from Madeira, founded in 1962 by João Paulo Agrela. The group gained local recognition by winning a band competition in 1964, leading to performances in Lisbon. Their debut EP featured covers of popular songs and an original Portuguese version of Charles Aznavour's "Et pourtant". The band's unique arrangements led to further EPs and their first LP, Conjunto Académico João Paulo no Teatro Monumental, released in 1966. Members were drafted into the Portuguese Colonial War from 1966 to 1969, performing for soldiers in Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique. Post-service, the band underwent changes and disbanded in 1979. Founder João Paulo Agrela passed away in 2007, and key member Sérgio Borges died in 2011
