The Kittiwakes, a British folk band, was formed in 2007 and consisted of Kate Denny on vocals and violin, Chris Harrison on accordion, and Jill Cumberbatch on violin, mandolin, and guitar. The band was created to perform compositions written by Denny after her visit to the Lofoten Islands in Norway. Denny and Harrison had previously worked together in music education in Greenwich and Lewisham, while Cumberbatch joined after responding to an advertisement on Musofinder. The Kittiwakes released their debut album, Lofoten Calling, in 2009. The concept album drew inspiration from the people, wildlife, landscape, and folklore of the Lofoten Islands. It received positive reviews, with Mark Beech of Bloomberg News selecting it as one of the Best Albums of 2009. Their song "The Arethusa" from the album also notably served as the title intro music for London arts radio show Little Atoms.
