Solomon Cutner CBE, born Solomon Cutner on August 9, 1902 in London's East End, was a British pianist known professionally as Solomon. Recognized as a child prodigy at age seven, he performed his own arrangement of the 1812 Overture without formal training. Cutner gave his first concerts in 1912 and began recording in 1929. He studied with Mathilde Verne and Lazare-Lévy before establishing an international reputation through extensive tours, particularly during World War II. Notable performances include premiering Arthur Bliss's Piano Concerto in B-flat at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Cutner was celebrated for his interpretations of Beethoven, recording the complete cycle of piano sonatas for EMI Records until a stroke in 1956 ended his performing career. His recordings of Mozart, Schumann, and Brahms are also highly regarded. Appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1946, Cutner died on 2 February 1988 in London.
