Best known for their chart-topping, multi-platinum debut album, Traction, Supergroove is a funk rock from Auckland, New Zealand. Previously known as the Low-Down Dirty Blues Band, the group was formed on December 31, 1989, and released the debut single "Here Comes the Supergroove" in 1992. The song reached Number 21 in New Zealand, the first of a half-dozen Top 40 hits for the band. Two singles followed in 1993, with "You Gotta Know" reaching Number 4 and "Scorpio Girls" hitting Number 3. Both songs appeared on the band's full-length debut album, Traction, which arrived in 1994 and topped the New Zealand charts for several weeks. A significant success, the album spawned the Number 1 hit "Can't Get Enough," which went platinum, and the Top 10 single "Sitting Inside My Head," which went gold. An equally successful EP, Tractor, was released during the final months of 1994 and also went platinum. One year later, Traction won "Best Album" at the New Zealand Awards, with the band itself winning "Best Group." Despite the success, Supergroove especially discord within its own ranks, with singer Che Fu and trumpeter Tim Stewart both being dismissed by the group before the sophomore album Backspacer was released. A gold-certified record, Backspace peaked at Number 2 and scored another Top 10 hit with "If I Had My Way," yet it also marked the end of the band's commercial success. The band split in 1997, with the compilation album Postage arriving in 2003. Supergroove then reunited a decade later to support Crowded House on a New Zealand tour. The band continued to tour sporadically throughout the next two decades and received the "Legacy Award" at the New Zealand Awards in 2014.
