American hip hop group, Cali Swag District, from Inglewood, California, was founded in 2009 by former Death Row Records artist Big Wy and Dairold Potts. The group initially gained attention with their debut single "Teach Me How to Dougie", released on April 13, 2010. Produced by Runway Star of The Makerz production team, the song peaked at number 28 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This success led to the "Dougie" dance becoming one of the most popular dances of 2010. Following this breakthrough, Cali Swag District released their debut album The Kickback on July 12, 2011, under Sphinx Music Entertainment and 319 Music Group. The group's subsequent singles included "Where You Are" (September 7, 2010) and "Kickback" (January 18, 2011). Tragedy struck the group when Montae Talbert, known as "M-Bone," was fatally shot on May 15, 2011. Despite this loss, Cali Swag District continued to release music, including the mixtape Deeper Than the Dougie in 2011. Another member, Cahron Childs, known as "JayAre," passed away on June 6, 2014, due to complications from sickle cell anemia. The group returned in 2018 with "Positions" (2018) followed by "Vibes" (2022) and "Love Away" (2023).
