Toussaint McCall was born in Delhi, Louisiana on March 26, 1939 is an American singer and organist, one of twelve children born to Rev. D. L. McCall, a pastor at the Seven Star Missionary Baptist Church. After graduating from high school, McCall attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His musical career began with local performances, eventually leading to a recording contract with Shreveport, Louisiana-based Ronn Records. His breakthrough came with "Nothing Takes the Place of You", which reached number 5 on the US R&B chart and was issued on Ronn Records in 1967. The song also peaked at number 52 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 46 in Canada, showcasing its broader appeal. Although further singles such as "I'll Do It for You" and an album followed, he did not repeat the success of "Nothing Takes the Place of You". McCall continued performing and recording for local record labels. In 1988, he made a cameo appearance in the John Waters film Hairspray, lip syncing to his hit song. He was inducted into the Northeast Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2016. McCall passed away on August 7, 2023, at the age of 84.
