Sonia Margarita Silvestre Ortiz, known as Sonia Silvestre, was born on August 16, 1952, in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic. She began her musical journey in Santo Domingo and started her career as a vocalist in the early 1970s, debuting on Radio Televisión Dominicana's program "Gente" with the song "Yo sin ti". Her breakthrough came when she performed "¿Dónde podré gritarte que te quiero?" at the IV Festival de la Canción Dominicana in 1971. She released her first LP, Esta Es....Sonia Silvestre (1975), and throughout the 1970s and 1980s, won multiple Premios El Dorado for best female singer. In the 1990s, she gained recognition with the album Yo quiero andar. Silvestre passed away on April 19, 2014, in Santo Domingo.
