Иван Козловский (Ivan Kozlovsky), born on March 11, 1900, in Marianivka near Bila Tserkva, Ukraine, was a lyric tenor known for his contributions to Russian opera. He began singing at age seven and studied drama, piano, and singing at the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theatre, Cinema and Television University. Kozlovsky made his operatic debut in 1920 as Faust at the Poltava theatre. He joined the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow from 1926 to 1954, singing over 50 operas under Leonid Sobinov's mentorship. In 1938, he organized and directed the VTO Soviet Opera Ensemble. Kozlovsky was awarded People's Artist of the USSR in 1940 and Hero of Socialist Labour in 1980. He continued to perform until 1970 and taught at the Moscow Conservatory from 1956 to 1980. Kozlovsky died on December 21, 1993, in Moscow.
