Josef Gingold, born on October 28, 1909, in Brest-Litovsk, Russian Empire, was a classical violinist and teacher. He emigrated to the United States in 1920 and studied with Vladimir Graffman before moving to Belgium to study under Eugène Ysaÿe. Gingold joined the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1937 and later became concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell. He taught at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music for over thirty years, mentoring students including Gil Shaham and Joshua Bell. Recordings include The Art of Josef Gingold (1989) and his Grammy-nominated recording of Fritz Kreisler's works. Gingold received awards including the American String Teachers Association Teacher of the Year in 1975. He died on January 11, 1995.
