Matthias Pintscher, born on 29 January 1971 in Marl, Germany, is a composer, conductor, and teacher. In his youth he received compositional lessons from István Nagy; in 1988 he began studying under Giselher Klebe at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. From 1992 to 1994 he studied with Manfred Trojahn at the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule Düsseldorf, and he was significantly influenced by Hans Werner Henze, especially during summer workshops in Montepulciano in 1991 and 1992. Pintscher has worked with many ensembles and orchestras, including Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, and the Cleveland Orchestra (where he held a fellowship). His works include Monumento I for solo piano. He has held roles such as composer-in-residence at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and, until 2018, Principal Conductor of the Lucerne Festival Academy. He has taught composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and, since 2014, at the Juilliard School in New York.
