Burka Band, an all-women indie rock band from Afghanistan, was formed in Kabul in 2002. The group gained initial recognition during a music workshop at the state music school in Kabul organized by the Goethe-Institut, where they released their debut single "Burka Blue" in 2002. Burka Band's members performed anonymously while wearing burkas, a choice that was both a statement against Taliban dress codes and a means to avoid religious backlash. In the mid-2000s, they toured Germany, where one of their tracks was remixed by DJ Barbara Morgenstern. The band garnered significant international attention in 2003 when they were featured on the cover of Yahoo!, appeared in the German magazine Spiegel, and made an appearance on SAT 1, BBC, AFP, and Spin Magazine. Burka Band became inactive around 2010 after the lead singer relocated to Pakistan for work opportunities.
