Hüseyin Sermet is a Turkish pianist and composer born on 30 August 1955 in Istanbul. He began his professional career after winning the first prize at the Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition in Santander in 1976. He subsequently achieved success in several international competitions, including receiving fourth prize at the Ferruccio Busoni competition in 1980 and appearing as a finalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1983. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bosphorus in 1988 and was named a State Artist of Turkey in 1991. Sermet earned a second honorary doctorate from the University of Marmara in 1998. His discography includes the recording of Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (1994) with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He also released recordings of works by Charles-Valentin Alkan (1993) and Reynaldo Hahn (2016). Sermet is the co-president of the Association of Artists for Peace. He specializes in the works of Mozart and Beethoven and performs frequently in Japan.
