Eleanor Steber, born on July 17, 1914 in Wheeling, West Virginia, was an American operatic soprano. She studied piano and voice with her mother before attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Steber made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1940, becoming one of its leading artists through 1961. Known for her large, flexible silvery voice, she excelled in roles by Richard Strauss and Mozart. She sang the lead in the world premiere of Samuel Barber's Vanessa at the Metropolitan Opera and performed at the Bayreuth Wagner Festival in 1953 as Elsa in Lohengrin. Steber's extensive recording output included arias, art songs, and complete operas. After retiring from singing, she taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Juilliard School. Eleanor Steber died on October 3, 1990 in Langhorne, Pennsylvania following heart valve surgery.
