George Melachrino, born George Miltiades Melachrino on May 1, 1909, in London, England, was a musician and composer of film music. He began composing at age five and enrolled in the Trinity College of Music at fourteen. Melachrino started his career singing and playing at Savoy Hill Studios in 1927. In 1945, he formed the George Melachrino Orchestra, known for its lush string arrangements. In the 1950s, he specialized in easy listening arrangements of popular music standards, releasing notable tracks such as "Autumn Concerto" (1956), which reached number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. His album Immortal Ladies (1955) sold over one million copies, earning him a gold disc from RCA Records and making him the first British orchestra leader to receive such an award. His work frequently featured on BBC and American Armed Forces Radio. He died on June 18, 1965.
