Ghymes, a world music ensemble, was formed in 1984 at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Nitra by musicians who previously focused on rock, classical, and Renaissance music. Initially intended to provide accompaniment for a dance group that never materialized, Ghymes began with traditional Hungarian folk music from Siebenbürgen. The ensemble evolved into a concert-focused band by the 1980s, incorporating elements like saxophone and drums alongside traditional instruments such as violin, viola, and zymbal. Their breakthrough came in 1998 with “Tánc a hóban” from Rege, which became one of Hungary's most popular folk-rock titles. Ghymes achieved international recognition with the album Smaragdváros (2000), reaching number 11 on the World Music Charts Europe in 2001. Their discography includes albums such as Messzerepulo (2006) and Szikraszemű (2010).
