David Frederick Tanenbaum is an American classical guitarist. He began studying guitar at age 11 with Rolando Valdés-Blain and later studied with Aaron Shearer and Michael Lorimer at the San Francisco Conservatory. Tanenbaum won the Carmel Classical Guitar Competition in 1977 and placed second at the Toronto International Guitar Competition in 1978. He has toured extensively across North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, becoming the first American guitarist invited to perform in China by the Chinese government in 1988. Tanenbaum has also performed with major orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Vienna ORF Orchestra, under conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kent Nagano, and John Adams. He has performed works by composers including Hans Werner Henze, Lou Harrison, and Astor Piazzolla, and collaborated as a chamber musician with ensembles and artists such as Ensemble Modern, Steve Reich and Musicians, the Kronos Quartet, and Manuel Barrueco.
