Sven-Ingvars, a Swedish pop-rock and dansband group formed in 1956 in Slottsbron, Grums, Sweden, began with Sven Svärd on drums, Ingvar Karlsson on electric guitar and accordion, and Sven-Erik Magnusson on vocals, guitar, clarinet and saxophone, who became the band’s front figures. Their first public appearance at Folkets Hus in Segmon earned them a fee of 172 kronor and introduced the audience to a rendition of Rock Around the Clock featuring Magnusson’s clarinet, Karlsson’s accordion and Svärd’s drums. The band’s breakthrough came in the early 1960s with “Te’ dans mä Karlstatösera”, followed by the number-one hit “Fröken Fräken” and a second-place entry with “Min gitarr” on Svensktoppen. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Sven-Ingvars released a steady stream of albums, including Guld (1975), Sven-Ingvars i Frödingland (1971) and later the compilation På begäran (1990), and maintained a presence on Svensktoppen with hits such as “Säg inte nej” and “Kristina från Vilhelmina”. The group celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006 with a farewell tour and received several accolades, including the Frödingmedaljen in 1972, Årets Dansband at the Grammis in 1990, the special jury prize at the Grammis in 2005 and the Lisebergsapplåden in 2006. Sven-Ingvars continues to be a notable figure in Swedish pop-rock and dansband history.
