Aarno Erik Raninen was a Finnish composer, conductor, arranger, and musician born on April 27, 1944, in Kuhmoinen and raised in Kotka. Raninen was a multi-instrumentalist proficient in piano, violin, accordion, and cello, performing across jazz, iskelmä, and rock genres. In 1966, Raninen moved to Helsinki, where he served as a studio conductor for Musiikki-Fazer before joining Discophon. He became a prolific composer for television and film, scoring series such as Älyvapaa palokunta and features like Pölhölä. In 1968, he won the Syksyn sävel competition with the song “Näin on”, performed by Kristian. Raninen also composed “Lapponia”, which reached number 10 at the Eurovision Song Contest 1977 when performed by Monica Aspelund. In 2005, he was awarded a full state artist pension for his contributions to Finnish music. Raninen died on September 3, 2014, in Tuusula.
