James Loughran was a Scottish conductor born on June 30, 1931, in Glasgow. He served as a répétiteur with the Bonn Opera in 1958 and won the Philharmonia Orchestra's Conducting Competition in 1961. Loughran served as chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1971 before becoming principal conductor of The Hallé until 1983. He was the first British conductor appointed chief of a major German orchestra, leading the Bamberg Symphony from 1979 to 1983. In Denmark, he led the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra between 1996 and 2003. His discography included recordings of Symphonie fantastique and The Planets, the latter of which received a Gold Disc from EMI. Loughran was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2010. He died on June 19, 2024.
