Guo Yue, born Guo in 1958 in Beijing, China, is a flutist specializing in traditional Chinese instruments such as the dizi and bawu. Growing up in a hutong courtyard surrounded by musicians, he learned to play the flute from his neighbors. In 1982, with the help of his sister living in England, Guo Yue moved to London and studied at the Guildhall School of Music. His career began with composing, arranging, performing, and recording traditional Chinese music. He released Yuan (1990) with his brother Guo Yi on Peter Gabriel's Real World label. In 1992, he won an American instrumental award for the album Trisan, collaborating with Joji Hirota and Pol Brennan. Notable works include "My Peking Alley" performed at the 1999 WOMAD Festival in Reading with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Guo Yue has collaborated with various artists including Peter Gabriel, Sinéad O'Connor, and Hothouse Flowers.
