Republika, a Polish rock band, was founded in 1978 in Toruń. Originally named Res Publica by frontman Jann Castor, the name was later changed to Republika due to censorship under the communist regime. The band's distinctive black-and-white performance motif and new wave-inspired music quickly gained attention. Their debut album Nowe sytuacje (1983) established their anti-regime musical ideas. In 1984, they released "Permanent Tango" and an English-language album titled 1984. Despite disbanding in 1986 due to artistic disputes, Republika reunited in 1990 and continued releasing albums such as Siódma Pieczęć (1993) and Republika marzeń (1995). Grzegorz Ciechowski's sudden death on December 22, 2001, marked the end of Republika. Their final studio album, Masakra, was released posthumously in 2002. The band's impact on Polish rock is evident through their chart success and cultural milestones, including the use of "Psy Pawłowa" in the 2016 video game SUPERHOT.
